Sheldon’s journey as the eldest of four boys from a poor family on welfare to an owner of a worldwide company is an unbelievable one. Working since the age of eleven and bringing his paycheck home to his mother to help support the family taught him many important life lessons that he implements every day.
A 58-year-old businessman who is driven by perfection, Sheldon continues to be up early and work late, which sets the example for everyone to follow. Sheldon has a found success in his unique business style which goes against the grain of “traditional” business management. He hates meetings, he dislikes committees and he believes layers of a corporate hierarchy bring nothing more than road blocks and additional overhead costs. Failure is not in his vocabulary and when asked about the recession his comments were simple and to the point, “BELFOR will not participate.”
Driven by his relentless business sense and work ethic, Sheldon has created an unconventional company culture based on one premise: “doing the right thing.” “It’s easy to do the right thing when everybody is watching, but BELFOR people do the right thing when nobody is watching,” Sheldon proclaims.
His management style has many conflicts; while watching every penny that is spent, he won’t waste a second to get on his private plane to visit a sick employee or customer. Celebrating with families at weddings and births are also part of Sheldon’s “job description” as CEO. Although some would consider the private plane a luxury, to Sheldon it is just another tool to get the job done. One can’t make 85 acquisitions and grow a company from one office into a worldwide company sitting in the airport wasting time and he is known for being in four or five cities in a day. “Time is the enemy,” one can often hear him say.
When asked about his family he enthusiastically says it’s grown to over 6,400 people. He truly believes that BELFOR people throughout the world are part of his family – he just does not differentiate between his personal and business families. His love for people cannot be underestimated. Sheldon continues to pave the way for the people who work “with him” to run more than 250 offices in 26 countries throughout the world. He still keeps everything in balance in his quest to continue to grow the company.
Sheldon and his wife, Iris, have two sons and are very involved in the community. In 2011, Sheldon launched BELFOR Cares, a non-profit organization giving back to communities around the world. KOTS FOR KIDS, a BELFOR Cares charity created by his wife, Iris, continues the message that BELFOR cares about communities, large and small.
